Phase 1 - understand safety with volunteer participants (1 week to several months)

Phase 2 - understand the efficacy and immediate side effects (1-2 years average)

Phase 3 - Study safety and efficacy to a larger group of trial volunteers (1-4 years)

Phase 4 - continue studying safety and efficacy  and LONG TERM side effects (more than a year)

The Fastest timeline possible to complete the trial as outlined by Pfizer article is 4 years…

SARS-CoV2 mRNA Vaccine timeline:

March 30, 2020  US department os health and human services started a program called Operation Warp Speed to help fund the development of a vaccine for SARS-CoV2

Initial clinical trial findings of phase I and phase II published

Moderna - July 14, 2020

Pfizer - August 12, 2020

Phase III Began with 70,000 enrolled to receive either the real vaccine or the placebo. After which patients were told to go about their daily lives (which most of the world was still shut down) and monitored for 10 weeks to see who, if any, would come down with COVID. Initial findings showed a 95% efficacy rate of either preventing or lessening the severity of the virus.

Based on these findings the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization on Dec 11, 2020 giving the green light to mass-produce and administer the vaccine developed by Moderna and Pfizer.

Based on this it took 9 Months in development before FDA approved the use of the vaccine to the general public through the Emergency Use Authorization
